Ditra Uneven Floor

Ditra xl allows for ceramic tile application over single layer plywood osb subfloors on joists spaced at 24 610 mm o c.

A seasoned floor that never sees moisture you could skip the ditra. Megabond from lowes or kerabond are good un modified thin sets. Multiple layers of vinyl is unacceptable. Cushioned vinyl is unacceptable. The subfloor is 3 4 x 7 tongue and groove plank with some knots set on the diagonal. Un modified under and over the ditra. There are various types of tile underlayment but all serve to smooth out uneven spots in a subfloor and create an unbending layer that prevents the floor from flexing underfoot.

The subfloor must be free of moisture damage including rot and sponginess and must be securely fastened to the joists and squeak free don t lay tiles on a concrete slab with cracks that appear to be spreading or irregularities that prevent you from leveling it. Ditra xl is 5 16 7 mm thick to create an even transition between typical 5 16 7 mm thick tile and 3 4 19 mm thick hardwood flooring. Some limitations include the following. Tile installers usually use cementboard as a tile underlayment over a standard plywood subfloor but as home flooring pros advises there are situations for which an uncoupling membrane is a better choice. I plan to use the thinner ditra uncoupling membrane.
